Healing Close to My Heart

Growing up, I was a typical Army brat.  Moving every year, making new friends, but with little stability; it even worsened after my parents divorced.  But throughout my entire childhood, my grandparents were my rock.  I visited them more often than I saw my father, for many years.

My grandmother taught me patience, love, and how to cook.  My grandfather always played devil’s advocate, teaching me to think critically.  Oh, and he also taught me how to grill a mean filet.

Then, when I was 13 years old, disaster struck.  My grandmother suffered a severe stroke.  She could no longer read, write, or speak, and had no short-term memory.

From then on, my deepest desire was to be a healer.

I didn’t get a chance to do that in college.  But luckily, at the age of 27, I had the opportunity to choose a new career.  In less than 10 days, I quit an unfulfilling job; decided on massage as a career; applied to massage school; was accepted; and started classes.  While not a great believer in fate, this easy transition is certainly not a chance series of events.

For the Love of Learning

I graduated from the Boulder College of Massage Therapy (BCMT) in March 2008, with over 1200 hours of classroom and practical training.  While in training, I worked on post-surgical physical therapy patients at the Mapleton Rehabilitation Center in Boulder.  I also worked at the student clinic at BCMT; post-event sports massage clinics; and other, smaller community service events.

One of the more interesting things I learned was animal massage.  Animals can’t explain whether or not they like the massage therapist’s technique.  So, I learned to interpret body language.  That translates well to being able to pick up on a person’s smallest cues, in order to provide you with the best massage possible.

I followed BCMT’s certification program with the school’s Continuing Education program. In December 2008, I graduated from that program with an Associate’s Degree in Occupational Studies (AOS) in Medical Massage (the massage field’s equivalent of a Master’s Degree).

In 2009, I became certified as an Orthopedic and Sports Massage therapist. I also became Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

I recently became certified as an FMT practitioner.  (What is FMT?) This myofascial massage technique uses finesse, not force, to reach deep into the connective tissue and fascia of your body to restore it to its natural, high-functioning state.  It is a gentle technique, completely passive on your part, that yields astonishing results for fibromyalgia, injuries, and areas with chronic stiffness and tension.

You can probably tell that I am a giant nerd!  When something is interesting to me, I have to find out all about it.  And I am lucky enough to enjoy my work so much, that I can bring in all of those new concepts to facilitate better methods and treatments for my patients.

Healing, Health, Wholeness

I love that the word “Kailo” perfectly expresses everything I love about my work!  I am here is to help you live a life that is healthy, happy, and full of the vibrancy and balance that so many of us seek.
